Hotel Review: A Stylish Stay at citizenM Amsterdam

citizenM is an affordable boutique hotel chain. There are two in Amsterdam, one located at the Schiphol airport and one in Amsterdam Zuid (south). My friend and I decided to stay at the Zuid hotel for a 3-night city break. Find out what we thought below!

Style: Vibrant, stylish, modern and quirky with some beautiful spaces to wine and dine!

Location: The citizenM Amsterdam hotel is extremely easy to access from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. You can catch the Intercity train from Amsterdam Airport to Amsterdam Zuid station which runs approximately every 4-7 mins and will take just 6 mins. The hotel is a short 5-minute walk away. We printed off some very clear instructions that we found on the Hotel website. The hotel is also located 2 minutes from a Prinses Irenestraat tram stop which takes you into central Amsterdam in around 5 minutes, so it’s the perfect location for exploring the city.

Check-In: Upon arriving at the citizenM Amsterdam, we were welcomed by a very modern and funky reception area. The first thing that stood out to us was the absence of a reception desk, instead we were greeted by self-service check-in desks which allow you to check in in just 1 minute!

If you’re not a dab hand at self-service, don’t panic, there are staff (or ambassadors as they like to be called) around to lend a hand if you get stuck. We found the check-in process on screen surprisingly very simple and intuitive and we were even given the option to choose whether we wanted a city view or garden view and if we wanted to be on the lower floors. We opted for a city view on one of the higher floors.

There is also an area in the reception full of iMacs and hundred of books which guests are free to use.

The Room: When we entered our room we were instantly astounded by the innovative design. We were kindly greeted by a personalised welcome message displayed on the wall-mounted television and iPad which we thought was a lovely touch.

It turned out that the iPad was our new best friend, allowing us to control everything in the room remotely including the blinds, temperature, lighting (which included different lighting modes such as ‘romantic’ and ‘party’) and TV. There were many channels available in both Dutch and English as well as a tonne of radio stations, our favourite being the Dutch FUNX station which kept us upbeat for the entire duration of our stay. I even listen to it online back in the UK, I loved it that much! Most importantly, the iPad allows you to browse and watch free movies to your heart’s content, which we definitely made the most of at times when we were suffering from our overindulgence in alcohol…whoops!

The room was incredibly clean and sparkling and the bed was probably one of the comfiest (and biggest!) that I’ve ever slept in. Don’t be put off by the funky toilet and shower pods if you are quite a private person. Even though the doors are completely frosted, there is a curtain to draw across if you would like a little more privacy.

Service: Overall the service we received was great. The staff were always very friendly and welcoming. They ordered cabs for us, printed out directions for us and the bar staff even opened a bottle of wine for us that we’d bought down the road to take back to our room, much to our embarrassment! If you need to iron your clothes, there’s a steam room which they call ‘Iron Heaven’ where you can banish those pesky creases.

Favourite Bits: The major highlights for me were the free movies and the super comfy giant bed. Totally perfect for hangover lounging! The hotel bar also had a great vibe at night and it was sometimes quite nice to chill there in the evening and enjoy a cocktail or two.

Citizen M Coctail

Improvements: I would say I only had one disappointment with the hotel and that was the lack of complimentary tea and coffee. Considering how much tea I drink, I think I spent a small fortune on tea during our stay…eek!

Price: Rooms at citizenM Amsterdam start at €89 per night and can be booked through

citizenM is suitable for couples or a group of friends wanting a comfortable stay on the doorstep of Amsterdam’s vibrant centre.

WOW – what a very lovely – and a very fancy – hotel this is – kinda reminds me a bit of the Waldorf in NYC…

I really like the reception area of this hotel…it looks very modern and inviting. I stayed at a casino hotel once that had iPads in the rooms. It was soooo convenient and such a nice touch. I haven’t seen this anywhere else since.

This looks like a nice place! Was it close to the main tourist spots? I’ll be there for a quick visit and am trying to figure out the best place to stay!

Hi Rachel, Yes it’s super close! Just a couple of stops on the tram, which you can catch from around the corner from the hotel. It’s a great location. Have a fab time! Make sure you check out Pluk Cafe in my favourite area called Nine Streets.

I love Amsterdam and try to visit at least once a year – I usually stay at a different place each time to try somewhere new and this place looks great – very stylish and a good location. Pity about the lack of tea and coffee though but the chic interior makes up for it
